The City Council had scheduled the vote to adopt SWMP ordinances for May 24, but the meeting was rained out. There were ominous thunderstorms approaching and their arrival time was estimated to be about the time of the meeting. The thunderstorms did produce some tornados that killed some people and destroyed a lot of private property.
My wife called the council member for our ward and asked him about Norman's membership in the ICLEI and US Conference of Mayors. I'd investigated the mayor's group because documents on the City of Norman's site suggested Norman had an unusual affection for them. The US Conference of Mayors is a US based (it has global membership) alternative to the ICLEI. It advocates exactly the same set of themes and goals as the ICLEI. The two organizations praise each other. They quote each other. They use each others logos on their documents. Members (city governments) of one are members of the other. You can move up the employment ladder from one organization to the other. They are in league with each other.
The council member did not have the information and suggested my wife call the city clerk. She did so. The city clerk said the City of Norman was a member of neither one of those organizations!
I was only slightly surprised. I knew you could support the philosophy and agenda of a group without actually being a formal part of it, but it would be easier to show collusion if a formal membership existed.
Well, if the City of Norman is not a member of the US Conference of Mayors, its mayor is. The City of Norman does not need to be a member of the ICLEI, it is adequately infiltrated by the US Conference of Mayors, or vice-versa. The US Conference of Mayors is as insidious and evil as the ICLEI is, and cozy bed partners will talk every night. Pillow talk - ick, icky - I may have ruined that phrase forever, sorry.
